Exams

Listed below are a range of the MRI examinations we offer with an abbreviated description. Be sure to visit the Sample Images page to get an idea of what your doctor will see following your exam.

MR Mammography (Breast)
With the recent advances in Breast MRI we have made the commitment to offer the latest in Breast MRI as an option in breast cancer diagnosis, staging, and follow-up. Breast MRI will be an integral part of our center's large and diverse portfolio of MR examinations. [more]

Cardiac MRI
More than 60 million people living in the United States today have some form of heart disease. A very important goal in modern medicine is the development and improvement of non-invasive diagnostic tools that reveal important information about heart conditions and related disorders early in the disease process. Metro MRI Center is the leader in the Quad City area, providing a powerful technology for the benefit of our patients: cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CVMR). [more]

Brain MRI
An MRI of the brain is the preferred method for imaging most brain abnormalities because it produces very detailed pictures of the brain and surrounding structures. It is commonly used to evaluate patients with headaches, seizures, weakness, blurry vision, etc. Brain MRI has proved very helpful to physicians in diagnosing stroke, tumors of the brain, traumatic injuries, fluid in the skull, multiple sclerosis as well as disorders of the eyes and the inner ear. During the brain MRI, a special device called a head coil is placed around the patient's head. This device picks up signals from the patient and helps to produce detailed images.

Spine MRI
A Spinal MRI is used to visualize normal and diseased tissue in the vertebrae that make up the spine, as well as the spinal cord and its nerves. Spinal MRI has proved very useful to physicians in diagnosing abnormalities such as: herniated discs, narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis), tumors, and infection in patients with neck, arm, back and/or leg pain. It can also be used to diagnose hemorrhage and congenital abnormalities. Spinal MRI requires specialized equipment and expertise to perform it properly and to correctly interpret the findings.

Musculoskeletal MRI
Musculoskeletal MRI can evaluate virtually all of the bones and joints in the body, as well as the soft tissues. Tendon, ligament, muscle, cartilage, meniscal and bone injuries can be diagnosed using MRI scans. It can also be used to look for infections, arthritis and masses. A diagnostic MRI requires a specialized coil for each joint or bone being examined. The MRI examination allows accurate evaluation of structures that are sometimes not visualized on other diagnostic exams and in most cases is the preferred method over other imaging modalities.

Body MRI
Body MRI is a method of producing extremely detailed pictures of body tissues and organs. Abdominal MRI is usually tailored to look at specific organs or tissues, such as the liver, pancreas, or kidneys. A pelvic MRI is typically used to evaluate the prostate, the uterus and the ovaries. With the use of specialized equipment and techniques, virtually any part of the body can be imaged qualified staff and radiologists assure that you are receiving the best possible exam.

MR Angiography (MRA)
MR Angiography (MRA) is an MRI study of the blood vessels. The blood vessels in the neck (carotid and vertebral arteries) and brain are frequently imaged by using MRA techniques to look for areas of narrowing or dilatation. MRA can provide detailed images of blood vessels without the use of contrast material. However, when imaging some blood vessels in the body, a form of contrast material is administered to create more detailed images of the circulatory system. MRA utilizes MRI technology to manipulate and reformat image data into 3D images for interpretation by a radiologist. The procedure is painless, and does not require the use of ionizing radiation or a hospital stay.

Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS)
Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS), is a technique used to distinguish the properties of a specific region relative to those of surrounding regions The MR spectra contains information from tissue metabolites. MRS is useful for looking at disorders of metabolism, tumors and certain inflammatory and ischemic diseases. Currently, Metro MRI only performs MRS in the brain.
